The Family Is the Medicine

Your child doesn’t need another expert. They need you.

For more than twenty-three years, I worked as a child psychotherapist helping children struggling with anxiety, emotional outbursts, school refusal, technology dependence, low motivation, behavioral challenges, and family conflict.

Over time, I came to a realization that changed the course of my career: most of the children sitting in my office didn’t need more therapy. Their parents needed support.

Not because they were failing. Not because they didn’t love their children. But because no one had taught them what children truly need to develop into healthy, independent, resilient adults.

The child wasn’t the problem. The child was the messenger.

Nicole Runyon, LMSW

Today, I work directly with parents because I believe the family is the medicine.

When parents change, children change.

When parents heal, families heal.

When parents reclaim their role as leaders, children thrive.

The Four Pillars of Family Healing

Every family I work with is unique, but our work together is grounded in four foundational pillars. These pillars help us understand why your child is struggling and, more importantly, what they need in order to grow.

Pillar One: The Mirror

One of the most powerful lessons I learned as a psychotherapist is that children often mirror what is happening within the family system.

Their struggles, behaviors, and emotional responses frequently reveal opportunities for healing—not only for them, but for the adults raising them. This is not about blame. It is about awareness.

Together, we’ll explore how your child’s behavior may be reflecting deeper family patterns, unresolved wounds, fears, beliefs, and dynamics that are influencing the system as a whole. When parents heal, children no longer have to carry what was never theirs to carry.

Pillar Two: Child Development

Many of the challenges parents face today are actually developmental challenges being misunderstood as mental health problems. A child who is anxious may need more independence. A child who is defiant may be struggling with authority and boundaries. A teenager who lacks confidence may not have had enough opportunities to develop self-trust.

When we understand where a child is developmentally, their behavior begins to make sense. Together, we’ll identify where your child is on the developmental journey and determine what they need most in this season of growth.

Because what a six-year-old needs is different from what a ten-year-old needs. And what a ten-year-old needs is different from what a sixteen-year-old needs. Understanding development changes everything.

Pillar Three: Technology and Nutrition

Today’s children are growing up in an environment unlike any previous generation. Technology is shaping their attention, relationships, confidence, emotional regulation, and ability to tolerate discomfort. At the same time, nutrition plays a critical role in brain development, sleep, emotional well-being, energy, and overall health.

We cannot separate a child’s behavior from the environment in which they are developing. Together, we’ll examine the impact technology and nutrition may be having on your child’s growth and create a plan that supports healthier development, stronger resilience, and greater emotional stability.

Pillar Four: Independence

Confidence is not built through praise. It is built through experience. Children develop self-trust when they are allowed to do hard things. When they solve problems. When they make mistakes. When they experience natural consequences. When they discover what they are capable of.

Many of today’s childhood struggles stem from a lack of independence. Children have been protected from the very experiences that help them grow.

Together, we’ll identify opportunities for your child to develop greater responsibility, autonomy, resilience, confidence, and self-trust. Because independence isn’t something children earn. It’s something they need.

What We Will Accomplish Together

By the end of our work together, parents often report:

  • Greater confidence in their parenting decisions
  • Less anxiety and self-doubt
  • Stronger boundaries
  • More connection with their child
  • A deeper understanding of child development
  • Increased resilience within the family
  • Greater independence and responsibility in their children
  • A renewed sense of leadership within the home

Most importantly, they stop feeling powerless.

Your Child Doesn’t Need Another Expert

They need a parent who is willing to lead. A parent who understands that behavior is communication. A parent who can tolerate discomfort long enough to help their child grow through it. A parent who is willing to trust their instincts, hold boundaries, and stop outsourcing their authority.

That parent is already inside of you.

My role is not to fix your child. My role is to help you understand what your child needs, reclaim your confidence, and create the conditions that allow your family to thrive.

Over the next 90 days, we’ll work together to uncover what’s keeping your family stuck, strengthen your leadership, and build a foundation that supports lasting change.

This work requires courage. It requires honesty. It requires a willingness to look inward rather than focusing exclusively on your child. But when parents do that work, families transform. And children are free to fly.
